Study Highlights Hormones’ Crucial Functions in Regulating Emotions

When a man experiences happiness, the body releases a surge of feel-good hormones, including dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. These hormones play a significant role in regulating mood, promoting feelings of pleasure and happiness, and strengthening social connections (Kringelbach & Berridge, 2021).

According to Kringelbach and Berridge (2021), dopamine is commonly referred to as the “reward hormone” and reinforces behaviors that lead to positive experiences. Serotonin, often called the “happiness hormone,” plays a crucial role in promoting feelings of well-being and contentment, while oxytocin, also known as the “love hormone,” helps to promote feelings of trust, bonding, and intimacy.

In contrast, when a man experiences negative emotions such as stress, the body releases stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Cortisol, commonly referred to as the “stress hormone,” helps to regulate blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and immune function. However, when released in excess, cortisol can have negative effects on the body, including weight gain, impaired cognitive function, and increased risk of heart disease and other health problems (Mayo Clinic, 2022). Adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, prepares the body to respond to perceived threats and increases heart rate, blood pressure, and glucose levels (MedlinePlus, 2022).

Experts agree that managing stress levels and engaging in activities that promote feelings of happiness and contentment can optimize hormonal balance and promote overall health and well-being. According to Dr. Richard J. Davidson, founder and director of the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, “happiness and well-being are not just feelings, but skills that can be learned and developed” (Davidson, 2021).
