Uchar Nallah Bridge highlights CPEC infrastructure gains
GILGIT: Infrastructure development under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is beginning to address long standing challenges along the Karakoram Highway, particularly in vulnerable mountainous stretches linking Gilgit Baltistan with the rest of the country.
One such location is Uchar Nala in Upper Kohistan, where heavy rainfall in the past frequently triggered mudflows that damaged property and disrupted traffic on the strategically important highway.
Even minor rainfall in the area would often turn into muddy torrents, washing debris onto the road and blocking the Karakoram Highway for days or sometimes weeks, cutting off Gilgit Baltistan’s road link with other parts of Pakistan.
However, authorities say the situation is set to improve with the construction of a modern bridge and tunnel at Uchar Nala.
The project is expected to provide a permanent solution to recurring disruptions caused by seasonal rains and landslides.
Officials say the new infrastructure will not only make travel safer and faster along the highway but will also help prevent the repeated financial and human losses caused by flooding and road blockages.
The Karakoram Highway is considered a vital artery for trade, tourism and connectivity between northern Pakistan and the rest of the country, as well as a key route linking Pakistan with China under the CPEC framework.

Gilgit Baltistan’s rugged terrain and extreme weather conditions often pose major challenges for transport infrastructure, making such development projects crucial for ensuring reliable connectivity and supporting regional economic growth.
