GB cherries attract global trade interest

Islamabad — Gilgit-Baltistan’s growing potential in high value fruit exports came under discussion as Caretaker Minister for Finance and Planning Colonel (R) Abrar Ismail met officials of the South Asia Centre for Regional Research and Regional Insight Forum in Islamabad.

The meeting with Forum CEO Jameel and Dr Fazal focused on expanding international trade links and exploring export opportunities for cherries and other fruits produced in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Forum officials briefed the minister on ongoing efforts to establish commercial partnerships with countries across different regions of the world and expressed keen interest in promoting GB’s fruit exports in international markets.

The participants also discussed measures aimed at improving market access, trade connectivity and export mechanisms for the region’s agricultural produce.

Gilgit-Baltistan is known for producing high quality cherries, apricots, apples, grapes, peaches and walnuts due to its favorable climate and fertile valleys. Agriculture experts believe the region holds significant export potential, particularly for Middle Eastern, Central Asian and European markets, provided that cold storage, processing and transportation infrastructure is improved.

The region’s fresh and organic fruit production is increasingly being viewed as a key sector capable of boosting the local economy and generating sustainable income opportunities for farmers.
