GB CM Calls for Green Energy, Int’l Support for Glaciers

By Shabbir Mir

GILGIT: In a dual push against climate change, Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain has announced the introduction of hybrid vehicles in government departments while reaffirming his commitment to protecting the region’s glaciers through the newly established Glaciers Protection Authority.

Speaking at a meeting aimed at operationalising the authority and strengthening collaboration with international organisations working on glacier conservation, the Chief Minister said the government of Gilgit-Baltistan remains determined to shield the region from the adverse effects of climate change.

“Despite limited resources, the establishment of the Glaciers Protection Authority and the allocation of funds for it clearly show that glacier protection is indispensable for a secure future,” Amjad Hussain stated on Tuesday.

Aspecialised committee was tasked with preparing the framework for the authority. The move comes amid increasing concerns over glacier melt and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the region.

According to the GB Forest, Wildlife and Environment Department, rising temperatures have contributed to the formation and expansion of glacial lakes, increasing risks to downstream communities, roads, hydropower facilities and agriculture.

He said hybrid vehicles were being introduced in government departments and stressed that green energy and alternative energy sources were necessary to reduce environmental pressure and protect forests and glaciers.

The chief minister called on the international community to support Gilgit-Baltistan in tackling climate change and strengthening glacier conservation and climate resilience measures.
